By Damien Knight
“Who are you?” I remember my eyes on her lips.
Aniya, use to whisper, “remove the mask
The shadows you hide in, I can’t see you like this!”
“I’d lift the veil, kiss you as my wife if I could,” my reply
My heart sure she’d call me for a lie, tell me it’s easy.
Failing to see how bounded I am, the knots leave me tied
She pleaded in many dreams to make her my bride, my queen
“Can’t you see my agony, My fate, a horrid destiny
Take my soul, all in my heart, how lost I have been.”
“Would you die to be with me? Stand at my side and fight?
Do you believe you will withstand the agony?
Your dark prince, a war torn, shadow bound knight.”
“Live for me! Live with me, Lady of shadow, my elegant flame.”
She denies me, resists, after begging her heart filled with fear
“What will they think, You and I, our world’s aren’t the same.”
My heart is granite I tell myself. My soul frozen over.
Will death be the only way? Must I sleep and merely dream?
Aniya, Lady of Shadow, I won’t give up. Is anyone her?
