Chains of Regret

By Damien Knight

I didn’t mean to disappoint
I try so hard to care
In your eyes the gods anoint
My every line written there
I wasn’t leading you on
No, I never meant you pain
Alas you are gone
And my life remains mundane
I let you go like a toxic
Venom that once dripped my vein
You in and out my life erratic
Kept luring me in all the same
Each day passes and slow I heal
The chains of regret brittle now
You near had my heart to steal
But its not something I allow
