By Damien Knight
Hey, we are “The Shade of Writing” a blog written by an entire family. I am Damien, head writer and editor of the blog. I am enthused we got picked for Liebster Award. The acknowledgement of our progress and hard work is encouraging.
We were nominated by Lamees Helal: Motherhood and All. I feel honoured as her blog is inspirational and enjoyable. You all really should go read her posts.
The Liebster Award is an award that only exists online. It was first established in 2011 and it is given to bloggers by other bloggers. You can find all the rules here: https://theglobalaussie.com/blog/liebster-award-2017/
We have to answer these questions asked by Lamees Helal: Motherhood and All. Let’s jump right in!
1. Out of all the countries, you have visited, which one did you like the most?
For Damien, (me) I would say Germany. It is the only other country outside the U.S. I have been to. For Aaron our, travel blogger, he’d likely tell you Korea. He lived there already 2 years and plans to return for another year.
2. What is the most extreme thing you have ever done?
I have been cliff climbing at Red River Gorge and I have zip lined at White Sulphur Springs, Virginia. Pretty sure that was the camp my parents sent me. As for Aaron he’s jumped off some really high walls and done more extreme stuff as part of his job. The kids well I think the most extreme they have done so far is ride a rollercoaster.
3. If you can take someone with you in your travels, who would it be?
Aside from my spouse and immediate family?
I guess either Maria, my step-mom, or my mother-in-law. Both would probably enjoy travelling to places we been going. I don’t know who the others would want to take but I suspect Cera would say her friend Nori.
4. Bike or Train?
That’s a tough one. I think it depends on the country I would be in. I might use bikes should I ever visit Vietnam or Thailand (both places I hope to go someday) but I really want to ride on Japan’s bullet trains. I know you didn’t ask, but I planned out what I would do if I got to visit Greece and it will be a bus tour like I did in Bavaria.
5. What/Who inspires you to travel this world?
For me, My Dad. I was raised a military brat and when I asked my Dad why he joined the service he said “I wanted to travel but didn’t want to pay for it.” My Dad inspires me in many ways to be honest and like him I suppose I have a need to travel. I can’t sit still. I wish I could answer for Aaron on this one. I once told him my love of travel and he replied that he never wants to leave Kentucky. I suspect I was his inspiration but I don’t want to put words in his mouth.
6. What is the best memory that you have while travelling?
What a loaded question because there is no way I have just one. I mean, there are moments where we were at Anime conventions with my kids that certainly rank top. But also my own accomplishments like climbing at Red River Gorge the second time and making it to the cliff under the waterfall. I suspect my ultimate memory though was when I was 10 in Bavaria and we found a pair of handcuffs hanging on an old building and we all took pictures of ourselves in them.
7. If you could give someone $1,000,000 who would you give it to?
That’s a lot of money. My mother-in-law. I don’t know how she would use it but I hope that whatever use she puts it to it improves her life. She has MS and her appointments and stuff I know get expensive.
8. Apple or Samsung?
Samsung all the way.
9. What is the scariest thing you have experienced while travelling?
When I was 10 years old, I went to Neuschwanstein in Bavaria part of Germany, I wasn’t paying attention crossing a road and was nearly hit by a car. My mom’s reflexes were lightning and she yanked me from the road.
10. Name the top 3 most beautiful beaches you have visited:
I lived in Florida during my early childhood and have family still there. I don’t remember the names of the beaches but one of my favourite was a beach on the Gulf of Mexico. The waves were great. As an Adult I have also visited beaches outside of Florida. My favourite is Ocean City, Maryland. The boardwalk is exciting with a theme park and lemonade stands everywhere. The beach itself is decent and surfing in the morning is well exciting. Then there is Tybee Island which I wrote about this summer. As long as you don’t arrive during Jelly fish season you will be all right. The beach is gorgeous and water warm. Our travel blogger, Aaron, recently went to Hawaii, and the photos of Waikiki look amazing but he said there were other beaches there he preferred. Hopefully, he will share that with us in his post on the trip.
11. How did travelling change your life?
I can’t imagine my life without travelling. I grew up moving every three years. I take trips all the time. My life is all about travel, it would be a tragic change if I were to no longer be able to travel. I learn about cultures and people, about the world, in the most hands on way one can. I suspect travelling has changed Aaron’s life but perhaps he can write about that for us later.
The hard part, Nominating five other bloggers. Since I have blogged I have come across so many wonderful blogs most are well established. Anyway here are my five, or will be five, had a hard time finding five new bloggers:
