The Sea Serpent

By Damien Knight

I longed for the light
My life lived in darkness
Watery depths darker than night
Only luminescence blinking
Comes from the anglers
Who swim by fleeting
Avoiding my domain
we weren’t meeting
I slithered in and out
patrolling my waters
but prey was never about
how hungry I would be
If only I could swim
up to the giving light
where others swim
I’d give such fright
